Across the pond, the rumors are spreading like an out of control genital herpes outbreak.
According to a source with knowledge of the situation, rumors are floating around the United Kingdom that former junior welterweight world champion Ricky Hatton may return to the ring after a three year layoff.
When WBA welterweight titleholder Paulie Malignaggi was informed of the Hatton rumor by a New York boxing gossip writer, he was quick to call out the popular British fighter.
“I hear that Ricky Hatton is interested in making a comeback, but what weight class is he going to fight at, super heavyweight?” said Malignaggi. “If he wants to reclaim old glory by winning another title he could try to take my championship away from me. That’s if he could lose 100 pounds,” Malignaggi added.
Hatton was last seen on the receiving end of a ruthless Manny Pacquiao second round knockout in May of 2009. The 33-year-old Manchester, England native has not confirmed or denied any interest in making a comeback.
During his successful career, Hatton’s fanbase adoringly called him “Ricky Fatton” due to his excessive weight gain in between fights. Eye witnesses estimate Hatton’s current weight to be around 235 pounds. According to several UK journalists, Hatton appears to be losing weight at a rapid rate, perhaps signaling that he is training for a fight.
Hatton’s last victory occurred on November 22, 2008 when he stopped Malignaggi in the eleventh round of a junior welterweight fight.
Malignaggi says he is chomping at the bit to avenge that loss.
“It’s a loss that bothers me everyday,” said Malignaggi. “You have no idea how many dicks I had to suck to get that fight.”
